30daysofbiking

Words like "Challenge" do not really sit with the GA, but the 30 Days of Biking appears to have struck a chord over the past few years with several fellows and one or two of the Basket Brigade stepping up and completing the challenge.

If you gave not heard of the covenant, a fellow agrees to ride their bike everyday for the period of April, it maybe a sojourn around the block or an outing to stretch one's legs and put wind in lungs lungs however to iterate the agreement is everyday, come rain, wind, sunshine and slightly rough mornings.

We have set up a little area to chat on the shed, to encourage each other to succeed, but of course we may mock a little if you fall (the second half of this sentence is particularly applicable to those fellows from warmer climes).

Good morning all .

I'm starting slow this year with a half mile ride to the doctors and back .

It's good news though as I didn't have the life threatening disease the interweb said  , though if I should suddenly curl up my toes can someone go and give the doctor a good kick !

Good morning,

My I throw myself on the court of GA opinion?  I quietly resolved to have a bash at this.. from the comfort of a friend's holiday pad en France…on Thursday 31 March.. knowing that I would be home in Blighty that very same day to embark on this caper. I had reckoned without the arbitrary and tyrannical power of that august body of men, the French air traffic controllers union…  After a fruitless five hour round trip to the airport on Thursday evening we found ourselves back at said pad south west of Toulouse.  The best Easyjet could do for us was a late flight yesterday (21.35 to be precise) from Nice to Luton (and not my preferred Gatwick).  To cut a long story short(ish) i drove 630 kms yesterday to Nice and we eventually arrived home at 1.10am on – and this is where I crave your indulgence – Friday night or Saturday morning…  I  promptly downed half a beer and took the Guv the length of my street.  Sooo, before bedtime on the day of 1 April I did venture out on the Guv.  Does this count towards Day 1 of the 30 Days of Cycling?

I beg  to remain, gents and bobs, your humble servant etc. etc.

Good afternoon McF.

I would give you that as you made all possible effort to get back to Blighty.

You were just hampered by the dastardly frogs .

Evening,

From a fellow the failed on the first day of his first attempt, I think you can safely sleep with a sound conscience.

Gents,

Many thanks all.  And (so far) your understanding not been in vain.  After a long weekend of footling little errand rides (on each and every day) I managed 23 miles today on my way to my barber of choice.  I announced this loudly to said barber in the hope of securing a free cuppa or even a beer, but no…

Particularly cruel of the organisers to pick April given its notorious meteorology but we of the GA laugh in the face of adversity.

Afternoon Mr McF

Well done so far, I'm hanging in too although the weather to date has made this a particularly tough challenge so far.

I fear you may need to change your barber, we have a tap house located next door to the barber, it's not unusual for a fellow to disappear mid pint (although the pint goes with him) for a quick trim, alternatively the apprentice turning up and disappearing next door with a bottle of something.

Regards,

Adam

Hello,

10 days in (1/3 if you pause to think about it!) and subject to the caveat above, I am still on track.  It's mostly local errands but two 25+milers under my belt.  April showers not really showing in any force.  Funny how I am deferring/bringing forward little tasks to compel me to get out every day.

Enjoyable if inconsequential challenge.

Evening Mr McF,

I'm still with you, although this week I am taking it a little easier this week. I have however dug the old cycling shorts out for my ride into work for the first time this year.

Adam

Adam,

Well done on dusting off the shorts.  I managed a 43 miler yesterday in 3/4 lengths and was not overdressed.  I managed to make my way up Ranmore Common Road (Surrey Hills, west of Box Hill) without dismounting (at the 20 mile mark) which was the aim of the jaunt.  Only to find that the tea van at the top is only there from Thursday, Friday and Sunday…

Half way through April and still on target.  Amazing how the Guv fits into the daily routine if you want it to (and you are currently a slightly under-employed freelancer…).

Evening Mr McF,

I'm still with you Sir, an easier week for me. I feel you are accumulating extra bonus points by virtue of actually riding the bike.

Due to an ongoing project I am currently sans Guvnor, although once it emerges from it's chrysalis it shall be worth the absence.

Regards,

Adam

Dear Adam,
La vie sans Guvnor must be hard to bear. Taking it as read that your machine is not being cold set for some 10 speed cassette/derailleur monstrosity, I am left wondering what you can be up to. I hanker after a re-powder in a dark blue myself. Perhaps for its sixth birthday.
More power to your pins.

Good evening gentlemen,

having kept this thread's topic in the back of my head, I  have managed to substitute public transit almost entirely with cycling this month (and the better part of March as well).

My upper legs have now slightly outgrown my trousers.

Well bobs and gents,

A leisurely spin to the farmers market means that I have completed this little challenge, subject to the caveat above.  All in all, this was no bother to a somewhat under-employed freelancer!
