The New Forest Swiss Roll

by Adam on 26, September, 2012

Gentlemen and as would appear to be more the case nowadays Ladies,

Over the course of the Pashley Picnic weekend this summer our very own Swiss Miss mentioned she was back over in Blighty with her Mater and Pater for a holiday in the New Forest this October.

Later that evening it did not take long for tentative plans to be drawn up, with Swiss Bob very kindly offering to take on the organisation for the weekend. Although she did not actually come out and say it, I fear after our little Saturday ride around Stratford she was a little concerned at our ability to organise ourselves never mind a gathering of riders.

So a few details, as can be seen on the above advertisement we are tootling around on the 13th and 14th of October based in and around Lymington.

On the Saturday we have the intention of meeting up at the Mayflower Public House in Lymington around 2:00pm, before heading off for a on our shortish ride to the Gunn Inn at Keyhaven.

On the Sunday day we are planning a longer ride of around thirty miles starting at 10.00 a.m. (ish) again at the Mayflower.

As usual this will be split into 3 x 10(ish) mile segments the end of each segment punctuated by a tea stop or pub lunch, on both days we shall be riding at the speed of the slowest rider something that MGcC will attest to on numerous occasions, so if you have not ridden with us before please feel free to come along and give it a go, we do try to be Gentlemen.

On the Saturday night Swiss Bob has been kind enough to organise victuals at a local pub (well a table anyway), if you would like to join us of the evening please let us know here or over on the New Forest Swiss Roll thread.

Finally, please keep an eye on the forum details may change, times are not set in stone so if you cannot make the ride until the (ish) time please let us know and we can try and shuffle.

Good morning gentlemen.. and all the ladies, too!

It seems as there shall in fact be just as many members of the ‘fair sex’ joining the New Forest Swiss Roll, as there are chaps – excellent.

Just to give you a preliminary hunch of the routes, I shall finally come forward with our ideas – considered and rubber-stamped by Mr Adam, too: For the longer Sunday ride we shall in fact venture to cycle to Beaulieu village (from Lymington North-Eastwards, to Tanners Lane, Sowley Pond, Buckler’s Hard and finally to Beaulieu). The ride back can be adjusted, depending on the general mood, one’s disposition and physical condition. (I should probably suggest to ride back over Boldre, as one could have a final stop at the Red Lion, before finally riding back to Lymington http://www.theredlionboldre.co.uk/). The ride (depending on who is holding the map) should be around 30 miles.

As for the Saturday ride, the idea is to ride from Lymington to Keyhaven. This will be a shortish ride southwards along quiet country lanes, with views of the Solent and the Isle of Wight. The destination shall be The Gunn Inn (http://www.theguninn.co.uk/), offering excellent vistas of the sea and the Needles – apart from beer and cider, that is. Furthermore, if one felt so inclined, one could keep the bikes at the Gunn Inn (sb keeping an eye on them) and walk over the spit to Hurst castle, built for Henry the VII in 1544.

The ride to the Gunn Inn per se is not very far, and rest assured that anybody fancying to join the Saturday ride with the notorious Guv’nor Assembly, will manage to keep up, without feeling too much physically challenged. (Actually, if one just rode to the Gunn Inn, had a drink and returned to Lymington without visiting Hurst Castle, too, it won’t be two hours. So I even consider that one had to ‘prolong’ that ride (ehem… stop at the Chequers on the way back!? http://chequersinnlymington.com/)).

As for the evening victuals, I shall most gladly make reservations for a table, most probably at either the Mayflower http://www.themayflowerlymington.co.uk/ or the King’s Head.

Best regards to you all – looking forward to seeing you soon!

AK

Haven’t I told you that we will meet again – and I am even pretty sure where and when by now. I can’t promise for the sunny day, but there where’s hope..

As a first meeting point, I would like to suggest the Mayflower in Lymington around 2:00pm on Saturday the 13th.
From there we can venture on our shortish ride to the Gunn Inn at Keyhaven
